Editor’s Farewell
I will retire at the end of the calendar year, so this is the last time you’ll read my name on the masthead. I want to thank you for being a lively, curious, and engaged group of readers. You were invaluable in keeping me in tune with Beloit’s boundless spirit, being direct — but kind — if we were off-base, and providing infinite story ideas about the interesting, courageous, and community-minded alumni associated with this college.
Some went the extra mile: people like Martin Morse Wooster’80, my favorite tipster, who never misses a Beloiter’s name in the press; Joe Kobylka’51, our longtime alumni director who shared his vast knowledge and mentored me as a newbie; and Professor Emerita of English Marion Stocking, whose handwritten feedback was constructively critical and downright inspirational early in my career.
Getting to know our student interns is one of the best parts of this job. To a person, they are informed, refreshingly creative, and they care deeply about the world and others. Their contributions to this magazine have been substantial, and my life has been enriched by getting to know them.
I may be moving on, but a vibrant Beloit College Magazine will continue with your support and involvement.
